Help to Save

You may have heard about a really good, secure savings scheme backed by the Government called - Help to Save, available for qualifying claimants of Universal Credit (as well as people receiving Working Tax Credit or have a nil award of Working Tax Credit but are receiving Child Tax Credit)

Universal Credit (UC) is a benefit that is replacing 6 current benefits:

  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Working Tax Credit

For more info on Universal Credit - www.gov.uk/universal-credit

Sunderland City Council also has some key messages for customers around UC Universal Credit Key Messages

The scheme provides a good opportunity for people to build up some savings, and receive additional bonuses

We are wondering if you could please promote the scheme to raise awareness and uptake

The Help to Save scheme is a type of savings account. It allows certain people entitled to Working Tax Credit or receiving Universal Credit to get a bonus of 50p for every £1 they save over 4 years.

Claimants get bonuses at the end of the second and fourth years based on how much saved, and up to £50 each calendar month can be saved.

Account holders do NOT have to pay in every calendar month - just as many times as the claimant likes, up to a maximum of £50 in each calendar month. After 4 years the Help to save account will be closed.

Please find some materials that you could use to support and promote awareness of this scheme, if you could display the posters and messages so that your customers’ could see them
